RIP Marcoland

One week ago, the game I had been playing for a ridiculously long time went the way of the moa. I signed up to Marcoland back in 05, when I was in Japan, in November if I remember rightly. That's 3 and a half years ago - about a sixth of my life, crazy to think I played it for so long. In that time it was one of the things I'd do on the Internet every day, and I would hate to think the amount of time I spent there.

It was a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), you spent your time increasing your stats. There were also towns (the ML version of clans/guilds/etc), which would have wars with each other, a daily arena, a pvp system, and a whole bunch of other things. But, as with virtually all games of this type it got pretty repetitive, and if it hadn't been for the community there, in towns, in chat, in the forums, I'm sure I would've left a lot sooner. It was one of those games where you could play it in 5 minutes, or spend however much longer than that you wanted to there. And it was completely free, you couldn't get any advantages by donating (just nice things like a coloured name, an avatar, no ads, a custom emoticon, etc).

It's weird to think that it's gone, but I'm fairly sure it won't be back, at least not permanently that is. I've been finding I have a lot more free time so it's probably a good thing. I'd thought about quitting for a while for that very reason. I remember the day the site went down, a week ago now, I got on my computer, finished doing the other things I do on the net, and then was like, what do I do now?

I quite enjoyed the game though, it appealed to me in a number of ways. Firstly, it was a long term game, it involved a lot of planning. It also gave you a lot of stats, which I always like going through. I even programmed a few things for it, like a simulator to simulate the training beach to figure out what monster would be best to fight, a town war visualiser thing (which I never finished) and a little script-like thing that would parse the rankings pages to list players with the most protection.

The in game chat room was almost certainly the place I wasted the most time. I didn't start using this until I had been playing for about a year (or so, can't remember exactly), but I spent so much time there. Met a bunch of people - who I'll sadly lose contact with now. I had something like 80,000 chat lines I think. Which is sick. All that time lost. I was even a chat mod for a few months before the end.

I was pretty strong as a player goes, about 100th in terms of total stats, and about 30th in terms of stats/age (which gave a fairer reflection of how well younger players were doing). I would've been better than this but I didn't play so well at first, but I made up a lot later.

So would it have been better if I had never started playing? I reckon no. All in all I reckon the time I spent playing was a positive. It helped me out I reckon, and there'll be people I'll try to not lose contact with. It was something that was always with me, and would often cheer me up when I wasn't feeling so great. I don't want to play another similar game though, because I know how much time it takes, and would prefer to spend the time studying, or out in the world with friends, or whatever.

Anywho, good bye Marcoland, you were good while you lasted. And thanks Marco, thanks for all you gave to the players of ML.

  1. Hi mate...
    Here other ML player frustrated.
I believe that ML is going back soon.

TL was my Town... and I had about 1 and half years playing.

  2. I doubt it'll be back, as I wrote, I was staff so I was a little more 'in the know' than the average player. Marco had emailed us that he was planning on shutting down the game due to personal reasons, but he wanted to break it to everyone himself. Then the hosting company shut down the site earlier than he thought.

Here's a (paraphrased) message from him:

"I wrote a long mail to my staff explaining that it was my intention to shut down the game and that I would have notified the players before it happened.
Apparently the hosting company decided to act on its own and I don't have access to that server anymore (although apparently the other one is still up), so I have no way to send a wide communication to my players.
    ...
I'll try whatever is in my power to bring the server back up until the end of its paid period; however it will just be a temporary solution, even if it goes up again it will be just a way to say goodbye to everyone, not a way to make the game last longer."

It sucks, but that's the way it is sometimes.

  5. Hello,

I played for 4 1/2 years and was # 12 in levels. My stats were not near the best because I levelled alot, but even though it only took me a short time everyday to sign on and use my mana, I miss it immensely. My name was M@dm@an and I like to think I was well known and well liked. After speaking with several of the long term players, I know if it had been offered, the game could have been saved. RIP ML you will be missed.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I remember you, M@dm@n, though I never really got to know you. I was Bob the Cow, by the way. But yeah, I know what you mean about missing it, it's clichéd but true, you don't realise how much you like it until it's gone.

But about continuing the game, it was Marco's decision, and while sad, it was up to him. If he didn't want it to continue, for whatever reason, it was his game to bring down.

Ah well, as I said, it was good while it lasted. :)

  14. Hey guys, Manowar here from lucky 13. I was really upset when Bob the Cow e-mailed me and told me what happened to Marcoland. I had been playing since early 2005. I was freaking out when I could not get to the tiipsi page for a few days. So thanks again to Bob for informing me. Quite a few of us have gotten together and are playing a similar game called Lost Realm. There is a Lucky13 town established there. Some have been playing for a while. So if you wanna stop by you're more than welcome. Farewell Marcoland. May you rest in peace. You will be missed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Everyone who played Marcoland is welcome to come over to Galatium (a smiliar game with more upgrades) to play and reunite as a family. Some of your Marcoland family has already found us, and we are happy to take any others that want to jump on board.

The game's only 3 months old, so you wouldn't be too terribly behind the crowd, surely with your game savvy, you'd catch up in no time.

See you there, you're welcome to join!

Lots of friendships were made in that game... Lots of newbs killed, lots of stuff to do.. I'm really really gonna miss it :(

  21. Lord Yanco from TL here. I played since 2005 and I miss the game too as all these other players.

ML was the only game that I played constantly for so long, every day.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Man, I must have been plaing that game for the last 3 years. I only really learned how to play recently, was a master forger, and even crafted the first upgrade to the apoc blade. *CRY*

It sucks that it went down like that though. Just poof/gone! I had so much money and metal saved up, was trying to raise those stupid golems to level 10. Am I brining back any memories here for anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Caldria XIII Here..

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I had just reached my 4 year anniversary in the game..wasn't really high on levels or anything. Lv 117 or something, over 350 mana..lv 100 blacksmith..

I was gathering gold to buy str 500 ring. I searched everyday metals, and sold em. I had few of those..rare items which gave more luck, and that luck spell. I found 1500-3000 metals every day.

I had donated over 100 euros for the game, so I had golden name. I was actually proud of it..showing that I had supported the game I love without getting anything.

Then one day..not found. Down? Then week..now month? I started to search the web and found Marcos letter to the staff.

Marcoland and pop(o)mundo were the only games I managed to keep playing for all these years. It is incredible. I played WoW for 2 months, AoC 3 months, Guild Wars a month..and 4 years (and popomundo still counting, name Kevin Taylor there), of these most simple online-games.

I miss marcoland. I wans't much of a community person there, even though I was in a town. It, harshly said, gave me a reason to wake up on Sundays when it rained. I got up, started PC, and went to marcoland to raise my stats.

After marcoland went, I needed new, similar game. I heard about this eRepublik.com, which was a bit of mix with popomundo and tiipsi.

It gives almost the same satisfaction, but it isn't marcoland. It ain't tiipsi. I really miss marcoland.

  24. Game owners that close the game down without warning are a bunch of a-holes. It sure is funny how he collected donations to the last day it was open yet he knew beforehand it was going to close. Why continue milking donations from people who will never get to use what they bought? I know another game owner that did the same - the owner of Demon Dimension. Elessar owned first demondimension.com and then demondimension.net. Each time he let the players spend tons of money increasing donator specials to insane levels of benefits. Then because so many people spent so much they no longer needed to buy anything from the game for a long time he kept resetting it. After that it disappeared a couple of times only to come back reset again and you heard all kinds of excuses from him why but the fact of the matter is he is a rip off artist that knows how to milk money out of his players.

  25. 30days here

RIP marcoland - it was fun while it lasted

In a way, it's kind of a relief not to be encumbered (har - pun) with having to maintain the daily activity anymore. I've been a slave (har!) to ML for wayyy longer than I care to admit. Finally I don't have to find a computer, or a wifi connection, or any type of signal anymore on a daily basis. Relief!

But it's sad that it's finally over. I would have preferred a better ending, but that never seems to happen.

Oh well - time well spent. I buried my armour in the river for those who care to find it...

    Fare well, all!

  35. At least the dude isn't being a TOTAL A-HOLE like the owner of Demon Dimension who did the exact same thing that was done to Marcoland. He ran tons of insane specials which literally made you feel you HAD to donate to keep up and now I hear the owner of Demon Dimension is trying to say he sold the game which is a load of BS. He knows that people have been ripped off by him so much that nobody would donate to the game again if they thought he still owned it so he is lying and I'm sure he'll have Demon Dimension back up and running again with the same A-holes he had as staff only all their names will be changed just to appear as if they are different people.

  46. Hello dear friends!
I also feel very sorry for the loss of Marcoland. That's why I wrote several goodbye posts and mails. I was supposed to post them on Marcoland, but the server went offline without any announcement.
So I'm going to post it on OD, you know, Hex' game. If you want to read them: opus-rpg.com
Anyway, I saw your idea of a forum and a chat, and I like it a lot! Too bad that I don't know a bit of coding. The only thing they taught me is
and that won't get you anywhere ;)

  48. What really ? I played as Joves, from TaO (formerly LoA). I was responsible for making the graphics (the player avatars and the equipment as well as custom requests) for some time, and he shut it down and he never ever told me ! Last thing I heard of him was "okay I have some big projects for Marcoland, I'll need your help, let's keep in touch". He never contacted me again. He must have financial troubles or something. His other project was colonists-empire.com, but apparently it got closed too.
Screw it, I'm opening my own MMORPG as soon as I can.
LONG LIVE THE ARCANE ORDER !

  49. I am not so forgiving as the rest of you. I donated so it would have been nice to at least have even a week notice of what was going to happen. But this seems to be the norm. Game owners who don't give a cr*p.

Nice to see everyone has kind of found a place to talk about this game.
Its been a while now and we all know its not coming on.
And most of us have probably moved on to new games (opus-rpg.com seems to be the place ive seen most go).

Well, now that ML is gone, ive had more time to focus on things in RL rather than setting up games/contests in the town forum.
    xD
Ive even gotten into creating my own website (which is im still working on).
Kinda like ML, in a sense.

My few passing words: I really enjoyed my time in ML (my little addiction) and often find myself wondering what to do online after all those years of playing, and all the time I dedicated to it in so many ways. Grew up in Lucky XIII and settled in The Amazons, after several nice stays in most of the other towns. ML definitely had one of the best in-game communities I've ever come across and I definitely miss a lot of people from that world, although I'm not quite as sad about the increase in free time I've found myself with. But it was a great place to relax and unwind from the day-to-day stresses in the real world. For setting up that environment I gratefully thank Marco, and the staff for helping maintain it. And thank you and good bye to all the wonderful players I had the opportunity to meet. :)

Anyway still see the likes of Kor, Fresh Angel, Balmung, Fresh Angel, Hyalix, Doaxe etc...in Opus Deorum. You can find me there too or Estiah (Guild Bikini Island).
i'll be going by the name Alexus or Sandy.

  79. Wow... I played ML for nearly a year in 2005 or so, and I was just looking online to see where the game had gone since I left. Looks like I found out.

It was repetitive. Plus when I played (and I don't know if this ever changed), it was impossible for a new player to ever catch an older player unless the older player stopped logging in. Also, people in Europe had an advantage in PvP - in the US, the server reset at about 3am our time, so we couldn't get involved in the killfest. But the community was awesome.

I was Carnivion from TG. I don't recognize any names here, though. I think I was before a lot of your times.

  81. Hehehe...it really is the who's who of ML gathered around a blog of no consequence. Is it sad that after 9 months, the OG Forum, the Main Forum and the Suggestions Forum are all in my 5 top visited pages?

Good to see many of my friends: 30, Canada, Firefreek, OneWing, Cristian and TK.

All I can say is good times. Just like almost everyone else, I dont have the time or ability to remake it. I know stevoo said he was making another one, but I havent seen it. (Is it even there?)

Any ways, just like the rest of you, I punched Marcoland into google. Guess I got a little nostalgic :P

Just a relatively younger player (2 years) pretty low profile except in my town.
Pretty sad that ML suddenly went down even though my char was pretty sweet. Not the top but i liked it.

  86. I accidentally decided to check what is going o with marcoland and sadly it is gone. I've been for around 2-3 years, I was Ar4i and was somewhere in top players and in Guardins town.
Quit playing when the game after it has gone too social. All that forging and recruiting was a completely wrong way to develop a game.
Still it is sad to know that this game is no more.

  92. Hey all, just found this blog while searching ML at work... It's nice to see that so many of you found a blog to comment on. A lot of people have gathered around the old admin of ML's - Hex - game. opus-rpg.com Not everyone made the jump, but a lot of patrol the chat room there from time to time. And as it appears, everyone is making their own ML remake game as well. Best of luck to Stevoo and sorry I couldn't help you with that. I am also making my own game that will play similarly to ML.. Someday.
Another one to check as Dragos stated is The-Lost-Realm.com ... The original game before ML. It is quite different, but can be a nice game. Just not as active as ML ever was.

Hope you are all doing well without me to ban you from chat,

I played Marcoland for about 5 years, hard to really remember when I first started playing. Unfortunately, I was in Iraq when ML went down so I didn't find out till a month after it happened. I still think that ML had the best game concept for its time but OD has done a very good job of making an alternative.

*sigh* ML was awesome even with all its bugs and balance and adept problems. I miss thee.

So many of us came here.
I've skimmed over the comments. Seen a lot of familar names, some of which I still see around on OD occassionaly.

It's bizzare to think how much time was spent on ML.
Y'know? I really don't regret it, it was great escapism and you were all great, we complained at the time. But I always thought it was worth it for chat and the forums. Still miss it tbh.

Some former ML players are now in www.xanthusquest.net which is a game me and my brother (pfft/Mavrik42) created. We only released it a week or so ago. If anyone wants to check it out, make sure you say hi!

My ID was 22061, I created Academy of War, I was president of 2 towns and staff for a year. I'll never, and never want to, forget my days in ML.

  110. Heey all.

I was BL Hiroku. In the beginning anyway. Later changed my name to BL Cosyjia.
Most of you may not know me, because i was only in Black Lotus. But luckily we had the most awesomest president ever. BL Black Canary. I loved everything about BL. The community and the people in it. The forum was, for me anyway, where i spend most of my time.

I think i was in the top 3 of intel in BL. My motto was: "All for the town."
Was planning of being a custom armour dealer in BL. :-)

I had actually planned to go from town to town in 2/3 months. Figured i had the time left, so why not. We all know what happened. :-(

I was just minding my own business when i tried to log in to Tiipsi.
"Servers must have a bug in it", i thought. "Nothing wrong, they are fixing it as we speak."
After 2 weeks i still couldn't log in. Then i tried to google Tiipsi. And i found this site. :-(

If it wasn't for this site, i probably would have been searching as we speak. (over statement)
So thnx Bob, for this info. Because if it wasn't for you many people wouldn't have know what would have really happened. :-)

  113. Hi all
I was Sir RobRoy from TG. I left these games when ML ended.

I have limited connection with others, by MSN.
Recently was tempted into some other game, and keep comparing it to ML all the time.

I think that the community, and the ability for the players to shape the game (adepts, guide books, strategy) was what made the game so personal.

There were ideas and concepts in ML that shouldn't go to waste. With ideas and maybe little graphics as in some other games, there could be a new great game.

Good luck to all of you, in whatever road you chose to go.

Someone was surprised that people still comment after all this time... Well, even for me (left summer 2007, I guess) the time _after_ the game just recently passed to be over the time _on_ the game, so no wonder - and anyway I don't think one is going to forget that experience and people.

  117. Hey guys,

I am creating a game just like Marcoland as I do miss it, and when I say like I mean it is going to be as close as I can get it. Only just started got things like PvP and attacking monsters down. Aswell as such things as healer and other things you dont see playing the game. Database is getting there too.

I need help with things I cannot find about the game such as how many metals to do this and that. How did Town Wars work and so on. I did play the game for years! but it has been a long time.

If anyone would like to help then please do email me: alex_mini_you@hotmail.com or add me on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Ruddy2007

I am using the same formulas as marcoland aswell as the same monsters and so on (A copy of the game coded line by line by me). I have tried to get in contact with the owner of marcoland will no luck so if anyone can help me with that would be great. As I cannot find them I dont see a problem with making a copy of the game (or as close as I can get it).

Hope to here from some of you soon,

  126. Wow just searched and reading through all the names sure brings back the memories. Marcoland was my first MMORPG and certainly the one I was most involved in (even to HC point). Good to see I'm not the only one who misses adepts/recruiting (well...maybe not), wars, invasions, arenas, PvP, et al. I spent 2 years in Lucky before moving around Black Lotus, Academy of War and winded up as president of The Amazons at the death of ML, some great feuds along the way (nods to GoL, TG and DnD from the ascension of Lucky) and some great people too (too many to list). Sounds like I was in a similar position to 30 days where the end of the game was somewhat a relief due to my declining activity.

  146. No clue what caused me to search for Marcoland tonight but here I am.

To all Lucky XIII members - Hello children. Vini (ID: 100) here. It seems my town continued to live and grow long after my departure. I have no words to describe how happy, warm and fuzzy it makes me feel when I think about our little town.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find any of the historic records of the town. I remember that there were some in the town forums but they are lost now... :(

  149. It's funny how things can pop up in the mind all of a sudden. I mean that game ended so many years ago, and still I think of it now and then. I was by the way SpitfireX of DnD. And please let me know if you start up ML again :)

  153. I'm back again to refresh memory of this great game. So many years left, missed the Town Wars :)
I visited all towns, but ended at The Guardians.
The first online game i played. Back at the era of 64 KB internet dial-up, wireless connection was not built at my country. Sometimes i spend a month of salary for internet cost.
I believe that i was the first player from my country at the time.

  154. If it is still running after so many years, let's kick it in to 2015.
I'm playing the lost realm and it is fun, but not as active as ML was.
I saw in in all these posts that people are trying to buy the ML code. Has some succeeded?
I would hop on over instantly to play! :-)

    1. Your forum seems to be down right now so I'll tell you through here, you should consider making it a browser-based game like it always was rather than forcing a client download.

    2. I have absolutely no experience with creating a game on a browser based design so i was hoping to fix it this way. thanks for letting me know the forum is down, it seems to be working fine from this end i'll check it out.

  158. I'm working on a similar style of game, still early in development and looking for ideas, here: http://leogen.furycodes.com/ (mainly just a chatbox for now, but we're moving fast!)

There's also a forum (subreddit) for these kind of games, if you're looking. https://www.reddit.com/r/pbbg

  160. I know it's not Marcoland but it's probably worth mentioning that Lost Realm seems to have picked up a few more ML players since the last reset (a couple months ago).

  162. This is Thorn - formerly #4935 in Marcoland. Ran across an old message board from Divine Newage Descendants and it got me nostalagic then I found this.

I still think about Marcoland now and then, very sad the way it ended. Cool to see many here, I recognize so many names!

    Cheers all,

  163. Hey guys, i was wondering what happen to ML. I remember finding out it was personal issues. But i never got a chance to get this far into the knowledge. I keep remembering this game.

I forgot what my username is, but i was part of black lotus and lucky xiii a few times. Miss you guys, i loved the war system so much.

Has anyone found any games really close? I am checking out lost realm and a few mentioned here.

I think i played fantasy rpg and another one mentioned early on.

    We all miss ML.

  165. I have just discovered that I am still member of a Facebook Group called DLS, took me a while to figure out that it was Dynasty of Lost Souls from MarcoLand. It has been such a long time. I hope you are all doing well in these trying times!

  166. Years ago I mentioned on this blog i was working on a server/client based version of what was once Marcoland, i wanted to create something similar and add to it with the features i was hoping to find one day in this game. Was to much work and effort just by myself, it died.

But recently I started learning to code in PHP, JAVA. And i'm now working on a web-based game in a similar style as Marcoland with some more features i thought of during the years i was playing this game. Still in development and i'm hoping i can continue with the progress i'm making so far.

At least a picture of what one feature looks like, a world you can walk around in. Hopefully being able to really build the towns we once used in Marcoland.

  172. I think of ML from time to time even though I didn't get very far. Maybe level 4 or 5. The look of the website brings me extreme nostalgia though and I wish I got to experience more of it. Pretty sure I was only in 5th grade when I played lol (I'm 30 now)
